There is a big similarity between the story of Odysseus' and Edward Bloom. The children in both were left their father for a long time, and after something happened, they start their way to find out their father's footprint. But the difference is Telemachos doesn't know about the story of his father, and Will knows his father's story , Will is try to proofs his father's "impossible" story.
If Telemachos lived in a normal family and his father tells the story of himself, he might not believe that. So, there is a reason that Will doesn't believe the story his father said. But if someone else tell the story to them, they will believe the story which someone else talk about their father. For example, in the movie Big Fish, the story of Edward told by the lady in the old house, Will believed, but he didn't believe when his father told him. Telemachos heard the story of his father from the powerful people when he is trying to find his father. He also believes the story which sounds impossible. Since they heard the stories from the person who is not their father, so they chose to believe the stories. If we put Telemachos in same place as Will did, and he listens to his father always talking about how great his father is or how brave his father is, maybe he will not to believe the stories.
So, sometimes the communication between father and children is better, if there is a good distance. That can make children understand their parents better.
