There were a huge difference of self-confidence between Oedipus and Antigone. That although Oedipus did not believe what happened before that told by others at began, but in the end, he believed that. Antigone was really brave that she had great self-confidence. She trust herself and did the thing what she want to do. She choose the way which she want to take, even she may not want to see the end of her, but I think she choose the right way. The question of Oedipus is the rule of family. And the question of Antigone is the unfair law that made by king with the thought from people.

Antigone and Oedipus

In my opinion, Oedipus and Antigone are two different types of people. Oedipus has a tough body but pretty weak mind, and Antigone, who is Oedipus’ daughter, does not have such a strong body as her father but really strong confidence. Antigone believes that what she did was right no matter what everyone else told her. She still did the thing that she wanted to do. But Oedipus, after someone told him that he killed his father, started becoming confused and wondering about whether the things he did before were right or not, so he asked more people to find the answer from others’ mouths.

For example with Oedipus, after the messenger told him the truth that he killed his father; he started to look for the answer so he asked the people around him and God; although his words let us know that he did not believe what messenger said as well. He kept asking people, which shows that he did not have self-confidence. In the end, he broke his eyes(he rake black night across your eyes 72) blank lights and sounds74) that he did not want to see any lights any more. He had been the person hated by every person in his country except one of his daughters, Antigone. They left there and went to the place for goddess. There is the place for Oedipus’ end.

But Antigone, a normal girl who did not have great power, had great self- confidence that no matter what other people said she kept doing the thing she thought is right. She is the only person to go with Oedipus and help him by showing Oedipus the way. After Creon made such a rule that broke the relationship between family members, Antigone still thought she should bury her brother’s corpse. This showed that Antigone is a strong and tough girl that she was not afraid of the king or someone that had great power. Although the end of she was really sad that she was stoned by the King Creon, and everyone in their country thought Antigone was stupid, but in our eyes, Antigone was a brave girl. She believed in herself and did the thing she wanted to do. In another way, Antigone was a success.

Oedipus was Antigone’s father, that means in someway Antigone must be influenced by Oedipus. In the story, I found both of them had great sense of responsibility that they always thought they must do something during sometime. For example, after Oedipus discovers what happened before and what he did before, he thought he must be punished. So he raked his eyes to keep himself in darkness, and he left his country. Antigone had a great sense of responsibility too. As the daughter of Oedipus, she felt she had to go with her father no matter how hard the way is. They lived together for a long time. So I thought they were similar in some places, because Antigone was influenced by her father Oedipus, who was a hero and king before in Antigone’s country Trebes.

But I think there is a big difference between Antigone and Oedipus’ soul. As we know Apollo is prophecy at the beginning and it became true, then the God let the plague happen in Oedipus’ country. And the things that Oedipus did after he knew the truth were negative so Oedipus chose to die at the end. That is what people always do when they are faced with a kind of great power. But Antigone did different things when she faced the rule which was made by Creon. She chose to fight the rule because she wanted to give her brother respect which he should have. Even the thing she wants to do will break the rule and make the king Creon angry. (Fitts. 192)

How brave Antigone was! Face to the great power, Antigone and Oedipus did different things. Oedipus gave up and obeyed the fate, but Antigone didn’t. That is the reason I think Antigone and Oedipus are two different kinds of people. Antigone had great self-confidence, but Oedipus didn’t. That’s why Oedipus and Antigone chose a different way for their life. Although both of their lives were tragic, but if I can choose to be one of them, I will choose Antigone’s. The person, who was brave and confident, fought with fate and great power by her great belief. And her tragedy would let us remember her as a hero who fought with fate and right.
